The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has initiated a new project to support and fund research into smart city technologies that help increase transparency and diminish privacy concerns towards IoT technology, among others. Each of six cities is receiving $200,000.
Akron, Ohio, is developing a smart city strategy, and Detroit works to make the work of their government more transparent and to increase the amount of available open data. Miami is bolstering its resilience to effects of climate change and will provide free WiFi for means of public transportation. Boston is doing research into sensors that collect data for the public good, Philadelphia is creating a smart city roadmap, and San Jose, California, is facilitating partnerships between cities and the private sector to preserve public assets and data privacy.
