Hawaiian Electric Companies has finally, after two previously rejected proposals, secured regulator approval for its plan to power the Hawaiian island grids with 100 percent green energy by 2045. The Hawaii Public Utilities Commission approved the utility’s Power Supply Improvement Plan, which even sees the 100 percent target realized five years ahead of schedule in 2040.

The plan includes renewable energy procurements that amount to 400 megawatts until 2021, and nearly the same amount in rooftop solar. One of the conditions of the commission was that the utility has to make sure to involve stakeholders for the various Power Purchase Agreements that will be needed.
