One quarter of the world’s city inhabitants lives in slums today and the number is rising. Unchecked population growth and migration in many world cities leads to the expansion of slums and informal economies. In the context of this current development slums have to be seen as an important part of the city. The following article illustrates how the world’s five biggest slums are shaping their own futures. The five biggest slums are Kibera, Nairobi (Kenya); Dharavi, Munbai (India); Orangi Town, Karachi (Pakistan); Khayelitsha, Cape Town (South Africa) and Ciudad Neza, Mexico City (Mexico).
