New Urban Agenda: One strategy – diverging implementation

Each city grows at its own rate and in its own way, so there is not one road map for all cities to follow. Nevertheless a common strategy is needed to guarantee sustainability, to cope with scarce resources, global warming, inequality, etc. The “New Urban Agenda” provides such a strategy. An essential issue in terms of future development of cities is giving people the opportunity to participate. A problem that has to be adressed in order to achieve urban development is to overcome lock-ins and path dependencies that structure the interdependent web of water, food and energy systems. In the end each city has to implement the general strategy formulated as the “New Urban Agenda” in its own way based on its abilities.
