Scientists found adding dried seaweed to 2 percent of sheep and cattle feed can reduce methane emissions by more than 70 percent. Methan has 36 times the global warming potential of CO2. Animals release 3,1 gigatonnes of methan into the atmosphere each year. By adding seaweed to the cattle feed methan release could be reduced by 2.17 gigatonnes. The local seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis produces a bromoform that reacts with the vitamin B12 which blocks the methan production subsequently.
