In L.A. businesses and owners of apartment buildings pick their own waste collector which leads to first of all trucks are taking overlapping routes and secondly some trucks use diesel as a fuel and some use alternative energy. Moreover this leads to a tough competition among the waste collectors. Some of them try to keep their costs as low as possible which results in terrible work conditions. The Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy and other environmental groups worked on transforming the city’s garbage system with fewer trucks on the road and trucks that use alternative energy. They urged the council to establish rules that meet alternative-energy standards as well as improve the working conditions by implementing a franchise system. Cities like New York City have already adopted this plan. If this plan really works will be seen next year, though.
