There are factors that a numerical system of big data can hardly catch. Societal and other non-numerical factors are neglected which can produce damaging analysis results, such as when evaluation of performance or risk depend on it; the insurance sector, crime monitoring, and evaluation of teachers’ performance, just to name but a few. Examples show that the broad field of application of big data also leads to many sectors being affected by misleading analysis. Cathy O’Neil, author of the book Weapons of Math Destruction therefore demands transparency and more ethical values by data scientists.
