There has been much international reporting on the high levels of pollution in China. The Chinese government took a ground-breaking policy initiative to reduce the pollution of the shipping industry. An essential part is to cut sulphur levels of marine fuels which would reduce the envrionmental impact of vessels worldwide. If other countries do not follow now however, China might not implement the regulation mainly due to reasons of competition. Governments will decide this week at the meeting of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) whether to implement a global low-sulphur marine fuel regulation in four or in nine years.
