The US Agriculture Department (USDA) turns nutritional data of supermarket products into big data. A database that will eventually provide information on 1,000,000 items allows customers to choose products with more transparency. In order to extend the current database, the agency plans to draw on cloud computing to provide the necessary capacities. The information that is directly derived from manufacturers is checked and processed by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) before fed into the system.
