Action on health in cities is the key to rescuing people from living in urban deathtraps where exposure to a variety of harms (e.g. tobacco smoke, unsafe car driving, polluted air and water) cause suffering and lumbering in those cities and even in the national economies. This weakens workforces and causes costs. At the 9th Global conference on health promotion in Shanghai from November 21st-24th the focus will be particularily on taking action to make cities healthier by promoting health. Mayors play the leading role because they have the power to improve lives and wellbeing of millions of people. The Shanghai conference will serve as a call to city leaders around the world for promoting health for current and future generations. In detail measures like enhancing the physical activity (taking stairs instead of elevators) at work or creating non-smoking areas could make a start.
