Scientists at Imperial College of London in partnership with UK biotech company DNA Electronics developed a USB stick-based HIV test that is capable of detecting in a fraction of the time of a standard test. The USB stick just needs a single drop of blood measuring the levels of HIV-1. The results are transmitted as an electrical signal then can be sent to a computer or mobile device. It takes about 20-30 minutes to complete the test compared to a day and lab requirements of other tests. The test is most useful for patients already infected. The test is more about detecting the level of the virus in the blood. It can help to detect whether a medication is doing its job of keeping HIV levels down or whether the virus has developed a resistance to the medication.
