Cape Town is on a good track to become a smart city. Still it has a lot to learn from other cities about the use of Internet of Things (IoT) applications to make its operations more efficient. ‘The Smart City Playbook’ report that examines the strategies of 22 cities worldwide as they become smart, safe and sustainable, finds that the progress in implementing its smart city programmes was still in the “very early” stages. However, Cape Town is adopting an approach suitable to its local context and shows strong efforts in investing in providing basic training to ensure that people in the city were equipped to make use of digital services. So far the city has already provides a public Wi-Fi, closed-circuit television (with 560 cameras throughout the city), established an open data portal and introduced a smart grid.
