In order to protect endangered species, scientists have to track them. Marine researchers started to use drones and machine learning to keep record of the population size of dugongs, also referred to as sea cows. With the help of drones aerial pictures of sea bodies are taken which in the next step are processed by machine-learning technology that identifies the animals on the pictures. At the moment the technology finds 80% of dugongs on an image, but since it is able to learn, the rate is expected to increase in the future. The researchers are sure that the method could be applied for the study of other species, too.
