The Interior Department finalized a new regulation that captures flared natural gas and corral emissions of methane that escapes from drilling operations. Large volumes of gas get lost through venting and flaring, burning gas as it arises from a well as well as inadvertent leaks. Especially methane released into the atmosphere worsens climate change. The policy requires cutbacks in gas flaring, more inspections for leaks and the installation of new equipment which will reduce methane emissions by 175,000 to 180,000 tons annually. The future Trump administration as well as the oil industry is very dissatisfied with this policy.
