Cities produce around 75% of the global carbon emissions, but they’re leading the way in the global fight against climate change. According to the Paris Climate Agreement cities are to reduce their emissions by 20 percent compared to 1990 levels by 2020. The Convenant of Mayors which is a project headed by the European Union and former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg set a more ambitious goal of 27 percent. 7000 cities are well on the way to meeting that goal. They have already reduced their emissions by 23 percent. The building sector performs the best with emission reductions of 27 percent. The transport sector has only achieved an emission reduction of 7 percent compared to 1990.
