Drug and alcohol addiction has become an American national health crisis says the Landmark report “Facing addiction” by U.S. Surgeon General. Furthermore the study offers reasons for optimism despite a still-increasing overdose epidemic that has killed more than 500,000 Americans since 2000. Moreover it presents evidence that addiction is a treatable brain disease with new therapies under development. 20.8 million were effected in 2015 according to the report. Addiction is a brain disease, not a moral failing that is why a culture change in how we think about addiction is needed where people do not feel ashamed asking for help.
