At the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona, New York City has been announced as the Best Smart City of 2016. New York was recognised for its Building a Smart + Equitable City initiative. The city effectively uses IoT devices like sensors that capture air pollution or lights that turn on when someone is in the room. IoT devices save costs, encourage civic engagement and strengthen public health and safety. The strategy of becoming a smart and equitable city is the result of a series of practical steps and tools city agencies used to leverage new technologies. The use of new technologies, growing local innovation and acceleration of public-private-partnerships as well as work with communities to develop solutions for neighbourhood needs makes New York a really smart city.
