In 2013 President Barack Obama launched Power Africa which is an initiative that aims at expanding access to electricity and sustainable development across the African continent. Under the Power Africa umbrella USAID, U.S. Global Development Lab, the U.K.’s Department for International Development and the Shell Foundation, the Scaling Off-Grid Energy Grand Challenge Enterprise funds 36m USD for African solar energy start-ups to support the geographic expansion, test new business models and tap into private public financing. Eight African home solar start-ups each won 4m USD of the total fund. In the long term that will create 120,000 new off-grid solar electricity connections in African communities.
