The US Forest Service made an ambitious plan: to set up a database of all aqautic animals in the western states of the US by summer next year. The information could improve the allocation of conservation funds and land management. The analysis of free-floating DNA in water bodies will allow scientists to collect data more efficiently than by examining one animal at a time. The approach however requires more research before it can be applied.
