A new working paper of the New Climate Economy estimates that the uncontrolled urban sprawl in India will cost its governments $330 billion to $1.8 trillion every year by 2050. The outward growth rate surpassed the population growth rate and is not accompanied with adequate development of infrastructure to provide for basic needs. The costs are equal to a yearly loss of 1.2 to 6.3 percent of the national GDP. Reasons for this development are seen in national regulations that support low density, in low national investments in urban infrastructure and in policies that support the usage of cars. The social, economic and environmental effects of this development are alarming.
