The US-based company TerraCycle started in 2002 with the goal to make the idea of waste go extinct. Up to date it has recycled 3.7 billion pieces of waste that would have otherwise went to a landfill. TerraCycle specialized on materials that are hard to recycle or that do not pay off to be recycled and that are usually not handled by the traditional recycling industries. The company operates around the world and as it cooperates successfully with companies and municipalities, it has managed to raise USD 15 million for charity and thereby combining environmental with social engagement.
