Tesla will be operating in an increasingly competitive European market when its gigafactory opens. In Europe a trend towards gigafactories is emerging. The German Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit (BMZ) opened the first phase of a German battery manufacturing facility in May. LG Chem plans to open a factory in Poland next year. Samsung aims at manufacturing 2,5 gigawatt-hours of batteries in Hungary from 2018. The Swedish company SGF Energy plans to build its factory in 2018 with potential customers like E.ON, Vatenfall, Nissan or Volkswagen.
