Researchers at Michigan State University are developing a biocompatible ferroelectret nanogenerator (FENG) that can be integrated in smartphones and that can save the energy from swiping or touching the phone. While the technology is still far from commercial application, it could make charging a smartphone in the current way obsolete one day. Moreover the technology is rather cheap and environmentally friendly.
