Ford Motor and Toyota Motor have formed a SmartDeviceLink Consortium with Mazda Motor, PSA Group, Fuji Heavy Industries and Suzuki Motor to speed development of auto-industry standards for in-vehicle apps. The consortium is a nonprofit group that aims at promoting more choice in smartphone and in-vehicle technologies connection. The companies are concerned about a growing influence of Apple and Google when CarPlay and Android establish themselves as must-have options. The automakers want an open-source software platform that all app developers can use instead of Google and Apple.
