An environmental police force or smog police will go into service in Beijing. The police will for example crack down on open-air barbecues, garbage incineration, biomass burning and dust from roads. They will specifically deal with environmental offences to clean up the air and penalize persistent polluters. The environmental police is a part of the central government’s strategy to make greater use of police, law and courts to prosecute companies and officials that exceed emissions limits.
