3D printed objects can change their shape after being printed

Scientists at MIT have created a 3D printing technique that is capable of changing the polymers in an object after printing. This means objects can grow or shrink when heated or cooled, change their color and even change their shape. The new technique is called “living polymerization”. It uses polymers with chemical groups that act like a folded up accordion. When the materials are hit by light they stretch out and change the material so their growth can be halted and restarted later on.
