The city of Melbourne, VIC, AU, has started the world’s first connected transport living lab in its CBD led by the University of Melbourne School of Engineering. Data from vehicles, bicycles, transport infrastructure, etc. will be connected to prevent traffic jams and crashes as well as cut travel times and carbon emissions. An area of 1,2 square km will be equipped with thousands of sensors that enables communication between thousands of devices and data sets. The project is supposed to deliver information and insights into traffic planning, pedestrian flows, public transport efficiency and freight movements.
