India is upgrading its electric transportation systems

Tata Motors is India’s largest commercial vehicle maker. Now the company has launched two electric buses, streching 9 and 12 metres, under the Ultra range and Starbus badge. Tata Motors expects electric and hybrid mass transportation to take off in India’s cities and to catch up with London, Beijing or Amsterdam. Especially in times of severe air pollution shifting to “clean” transportation becomes more and more important. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has already ordered 25 buses for this year. In the next year the company estimates the electric and hybrid buses will reach 400-500 units. In India there are strong incentives for hybrid buses because buyers are refunded 75 percent of the capital. The government is giving the technology a head-start over electric vehicles.
