Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in cooperation with the World Economic Forum, have created a website, named “Treepedia”, that measures and compares cities’ green canopies. Treepedia uses Google Street View data and is a tool for city planners as well as city residents. Treepedia visualizes green spaces in cities in a metric that is called “Green View Indes” which helps city planners to evaluate and compare green canopy coverage in relation to other cities. The initiative is supposed to help shaping the cities of the future, teach residents a greater appreciation of the green spaces and reinforce the role of the green canopy in fighting the climate change.
