According to a report by the thinktank Climate Analytics, the European Union needs to completely shut all 300 coal plants by 2030 otherwise it will overshoot its Paris climate pledges. The coal use is falling by about 1 per cent a year but is still generates a quarter of the continent’s power and a fifth of the greenhouse gas emissions.
