Volkswagen and Mobileye will cooperate and implement a new navigation standard for autonomous driving which will start in 2018. Future VW models will use the Mobileye camera-based map and localization technology Road Experience Management (REM). REM uses data from many cars or crowd-sourcing data to generate real-time data for localization and acquisition of HD track data. VW cars that are equipped with front cameras acquire lane markings and road information by using Mobileye optical sensor systems. The gathered information flows into a cloud. The data will then be used for continous improvement of HD navigation maps with precise localization.
