Showing what can be done and engaging the interest of energy providers around the globe, Tesla and affiliated company Solar City provided the Kuaui Island Utility Cooperative of Hawaii with 13 megawatts of solar panels and 52 megawatt-hours of Powerback batteries. Hawaiians mainly used diesel fuel for electricity up until now, and with this big-scale installation the need for it will be cut by 1.6 billion gallons a year. The undertaking demonstrates that the switch to solar energy is a cost benefit immediately.
