Intel acquires Mobileye to stay competitive

In the race for dominance in the field of automated vehicles, Intel bought Mobileye for $15.3 billion. The manufacturer of sensors and cameras for self-driving cars is one of several lesser known organizations supplying the required technology to giants like Intel.

With this move, Intel will probably be considered a top tier contender in the automotive industry alongside competitors like Uber and Google. With the estimated annual worth of the of the self-driving cars industry being $25 billion in 2025 already, this might give Intel a grip on a market again like they once did with their chips for personal computers.

Mobileye’s co-founder Amnon Shashua is hoping to establish RoadBook, a detailed and map of streets in the US and Europe with image and location data collected by cars running on Mobileye systems.
