Bloomberg Philantropies, in the framework of their annual What Works Cities conference in New York, presented a certification initiative for cities to become smarter based on points. Once a city is part of the program, it will earn points to get a silver, gold, or platinum rating based on how it does in 50 different criteria.
The system is an attempt to establish a national standard for how city governments change and enact policies to pave the way for the future of smart cities. Initiators are confident that it will create collaboration rather than unhealthy competition.
