The beginning of the end for coal in Europe

At a press conference in Brussels last Wednesday, energy utilities from around the EU pledged to stop building new coal-fired power plants from 2020 onward. Except for Poland and Greece, all EU countries signed up to the initiative in a bid to show commitment to the Paris climate agreement as well as to become carbon-neutral in the energy sector by 2050. Eurelectric reaffirmed the historic pledge in a press conference.
