At the F8 developer conference, Facebook demonstrated two technologies that their Building 8 hardware lab is working on. One of themt lets people hear through their skin. Transmitting thoughts with pressure changes and vibrations, a Facebook engineer repeated words communicated to her through sensors embedded in a sleeve on her arm. The objective is to have people think in one language, and then have their conversational partner feel it in another.

The second technology was demonstrated with an ALS patient typing words using their thoughts with improved, non-invasive optical imaging sensors. This would help people who cannot read or write, and Facebook is aiming at 100 words per minute with the technology.

The company is well aware of the privacy concerns this will cause, highlighting that “Facebook is not interested in broadcasting the random noise in your head.”
