The Indonesian government has given its approval for the Palmerah Tidal Bridge, a large-scale tidal power facility that is to be constructed around the Indonesian island of Flores until 2019. Associated companies claim it will be the largest tidal power station in the world, but stations in South Korea and France exist with greater power capacity.
Still, the Palmerah Tidal Bridge will provide electricity for 100,000 people in its first phase, and enough for half a million Indonesians in the second. It marks the first deal to emerge from a strategic hydropower alliance between the Indonesian and Dutch governments, and is a promising step to shift away from Indonesia’s dependency on polluting diesel generator.
The social and environmental impact of the project have still to be properly evaluated.
