Ford Motor Co. has become the latest entrant into the growing space of ‘over-the-air’ software updates, adding Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to its Sync3-fitted vehicles of 2016 via a wireless software update. The latest upgrade to Sync3 will include an interactive-touch screen and the updates will be installed over the Wi-Fi network rather than new software being uploaded to smartphones by the manufacturers. Security and revenue concerns from dealers has been a major hindrance to the adoption of this technology, however after Tesla’s early lead in 2015, more and more traditional automakers are moving this approach. According to Ford, customers can also get the updates from their dealers through a USB.
