In an effort to combat congestion and smog in Beijing, the local government has removed 180.000 old and polluting vehicles from the roads of the city in the first months of 2017. To meet their environmental commitments, the city is planning to get rid of 300.000 more by the end of the year.

Average readings of PM2.5 reached 95 micrograms per cubic metre in Beijing in the beginning of 2017, with the World Health Organization (WHO) recommending a maximum of 10 micrograms. According to the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau, 5.7 million vehicles are one of the leading causes for smog in the city.
