Drivers don’t trust ridesharing companies for autonomous cars

According to a recent study, drivers do not trust ridesharing companies such as Uber to build autonomous cars. This report highlights the need of partnerships of the likes of Google and Lyft. Around 5,045 drivers from five different countries undertook the survey and about 30 percent of them trust the traditional car manufacturers to build autonomous cars whereas about 20 percent place their bet on tech companies of the likes of Google and Apple. However, only a mere 4 percent said that they trust ride-hailing companies to build and autonomous car.

Bob Pishue, senior economist at Inrix and co-author of the report said, “Consumers and drivers have trust in these long-running corporations. Rideshare companies are newer, and although they’re popular, people tend to trust those they’re most familiar with.” He further stressed upon the importance of partnerships between the companies, where the experience of an older company and the technology and a newer entrant could appeal a large customer base. Safety is another issue with only 71 percent of the respondents agreeing that autonomous cars will be safer than traditional ones.
