What do the US-American island Molokai, Hawaii, and the North-European island Samso, Denmark have in common? They are two of many more islands that push forward the aim for fossil-fuel-free societies and are both engaging in adapting renewable energies and have both joined a knowledge-sharing platform called the Tentou Project. By becoming independent of fossil-fuels, islands are taking a clear step in approaching climate goals, since islands are most vulnerable towards climate change impacts. While insularity implies energy dependency on fossil fuels, high transportation costs, limited economic diversification and access to markets, the steps of islands and island-nations to help help themselves seems obvious. As there is no blueprint modell that can be adapted to the legal, geographical and social contexts of every island, initiatives like the Smart Island Initiative help in fostering mutual agreements, frameworks and knowledge exchanges.
