The report Africa’s Cities: Opening Doors to the World, recently released by the World Bank, deals with the low level of regional and international trade and spatial disorganization as key factors of why African cities are as poor as they are. The report suggests to African policymakers and governments to act fast to reform land markets and regulations. Coordinated infrastructure investments in urban transport and the building of interconnectedness between sites, structures, and basic services are seen as possible ways to make cities more productive and prosperous.
Another report, Greening Africa’s Cities: Enhancing the Relationship between Urbanization, Environmental Assets, and Ecosystem Services, urges cities to foster environmentally friendly urban planning and an improved understanding of urbanization’s impact on the environment.
