Though the automotive industry is largely investing in EV and hybrid technologies, the German manufacturer Bosch proposes using synthetic fuels that are carbon neutral to prevent the combustion engine from an untimely death. Synthetic fuels should substitute diesel and gasoline in the long term. The process of developing these environmentally friendlier fuels is in the making – it would require extracting hydrogen from water and adding carbon to it. The carbon would be used from waste products of factories or extracted from the air via special filters.
Bosch’s chairman Volkmar Denner sees synthetic fuels as a valuable alternative and supplement to electric mobility, because other combustion engines found in ships, aircrafts and trucks could be supplied and made ecofriendly with the help of these man-made fuels.
