Researchers have studied the development of the nonprofit landscape in the United States, and have found that these organizations have played a pivotal role in the rapid decline of crime rates in the recent past. The research was conducted using data from the National Center for Charitable Statistics.
“Every 10 additional organizations in a city with 100,000 residents, they estimate, led to a 9 percent drop in the murder rate and a 6 percent drop in violent crime,” The New York Times reports.
