A new global alliance formed to phase out coal-fired power, the Powering Past Coal Alliance, has officially been launched at COP23 Summit in Bonn this week.
Several countries have signed up, including the UK, Canada, Mexico, France, Finland, New Zealand, Italy, and Denmark. The goal is to get 50 signatures by next year. Right now, there are already 27.
“The Powering Past Coal Alliance will signal to the world that the time of coal has passed. The UK is committed to completely phasing out unabated coal-fire power generation no later than 2025 and we hope to inspire others to follow suit,” UK climate change and industry minister Claire Perry said.
