Kiara Nirghin, a 16-year old South African teenager, created a natural polymer out of the peel of citrus fruits. It is biodegradable and cheap compared to the powder-like super-absorbent polymers (SAP), that are used in baby diapers. Most important, it has proven to be more effective than regular SAPs in absorbing water. When mixed in soil, her invention can help to store rainwater.
