To reduce maritime pollution the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee is gathering in London on October, 24-28 to decide whether to introduce a worldwide limit of sulfur emissions. If the decision goes through, fuel costs in the shipping industry would rise significantly. No matter what the IMO will decide, the EU agreed on a regulation change from the current maximum 3.5% to 0.5% sulfur within 370 km of EU Member States’ coasts by 2020.
