Much has been reported on driverless cars, but little attention has been given to technical developments for unmanned ships. This year the US Navy launched its first unmanned ship, the 132 foot Sea Hunter. It is expected to be in service by 2018. Ships that can be steered autmatically have huge advantages such as cost savings from personnel to extra space in the ship. Most importantly however, security can be increased since as with other modes of transportation, most accidents are due to human error.
