A new way to sustainably process metals

Researchers at McGill University in Montreal have developed a method to create metal from raw materials, convert them to consumer products or reclaim them without the toxic chemicals normally associated with such processes. Using organic compounds instead of chlorine and hydrochloric acid to purify germanium, which is commonly used in electronic devices, the team now wants to convince the industry to adopt the technology that can be applied to numerous other metals as well.

“But the platform works on many different kinds of metals and metal oxides, and we think that it could become a technology adopted by industry. We are looking for stakeholders with whom we can partner to move this technology forward.”
