Amazon considers to build two-storey supermarkets that have size of 10,000 to 40,000 square feet and rely on a fleet of robots. Those supermarkets are at the prototype stage at the moment and will expand on the smaller Amazon Go grocery stores. Both the grocery stores and the supermarkets do not contain cashiers, registers and lines. They only rely on an app on the customer’s phones that detect and pick items off the shelves. The robots are upstairs to find and pack items for customers on the floor below. The whole supermarket could be run with only three human employees.
